I read this article last night and I can only say from the bottom of my heart, I am so glad I am from America where I can live free and write poetry without living in fear of my life. If I was from Afghanistan, my life would have been over long ago because I could never live under that Tyranny these poor women live under. Running my mouth has gotten me into trouble a time or two growing up, starting at age 3, I'm SO GLAD my Dad was an enlightened man.
If you aren't grateful for the things you take for granted, read this article,and the next time you read a poem or pick up the phone to call someone BE GRATEFUL that your FAMILY will not beat you or kill you because you dared to live some part of your life for yourself.
If by some chance I reach some girl somewhere where this is not the case and you must look over your shoulder but you do it anyway, then I will have done something a woman's voice must be heard, Man does not occupy the World without WoMan , if her voice is silenced, how is the World complete?
As for me, I shall continue to write poetry, perhaps with more fervor since i know there is a sisterhood suffering for the right to do it, so in their Honor my first verse in the Afghan style of a Pashtun folk poem called a landai~
~ For a few words spoken or written of Love
they risk all for the joy it brings ~
